Morocco is taking a new step in building its artificial-intelligence ecosystem. On April 8, 2026, on the sidelines of GITEX Africa Morocco, a memorandum of understanding marked the launch of the first phases of Nexus AI Factory in Morocco. This announcement isn’t just about a data center: it outlines a chain running from computing power to solution incubation.

Nexus AI Factory by the numbers

According to Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform, the project combines three components:

  • a high-performance computing (HPC) data center;
  • a center of excellence dedicated to services and skills transfer;
  • an innovation hub designed to incubate new solutions.

The announced initial investment reaches MAD 12 billion. A first phase of MAD 5 billion is set to activate 16 MW in Nouaceur. A second phase of MAD 7 billion is set to add 20 MW in northern Morocco. The stated goal is to reach 36 MW of combined capacity and 125 direct jobs by the end of 2027.

Why compute infrastructure is becoming strategic

In AI, a good idea isn’t enough. Teams need computing power, well-governed data and the skills to put models into production. For young companies, these resources can be a significant financial and technical barrier.

Local infrastructure can shorten the path from prototype to product, particularly to:

  • train or fine-tune specialized models;
  • deploy services that require low latency;
  • host sensitive data under a local framework;
  • test applications in healthcare, industry, agriculture or public services.

This builds on our analysis of AI opportunities in Morocco and the AI skills to develop.

Three opportunities for Moroccan AI startups

1. Build vertical solutions

Moroccan startups are better off solving a specific business problem than replicating a general-purpose model. Industrial maintenance, assisted diagnostics, agricultural optimization, multilingual customer relations or document processing are more accessible territory.

2. Offer services around the infrastructure

An AI Factory also creates demand for integration, cybersecurity, data governance, model evaluation and cost optimization. These service layers can become sustainable B2B markets.

3. Connect research and market

The center of excellence and the innovation hub can bring researchers, engineers, industrial players and entrepreneurs closer together. This connection is decisive for turning research into marketable innovation.

Questions that remain open

The announcement sets out an ambition and capacities, but several factors will determine its impact: access terms for startups, pricing, operational timeline, services actually available and the rules governing data. A young company should therefore avoid waiting for the infrastructure before getting started.

The right strategy is to validate customer need, data quality and product economics right now. Compute is only a means: the competitive edge remains the ability to deliver a useful, measurable solution.

How to prepare starting in 2026

  1. choose a specific sector use case;
  2. measure the volume and sensitivity of the data;
  3. estimate the compute needs of the prototype, then of scaling up;
  4. document security and compliance requirements;
  5. build a first pilot with a business partner.

Nexus AI Factory can strengthen Morocco’s technological sovereignty and attractiveness. For entrepreneurs, the priority now is to prepare the use cases capable of turning this infrastructure into economic value.
