Every year in Morocco, hundreds of doctoral theses are defended and thousands of scientific publications are produced. And yet, the number of university spin-offs remains tiny. This guide is aimed at researchers, PhD students and faculty researchers who suspect their work has market value — and who want to know where to start.

Step 1: Identify the valorization opportunity

Any valorization begins with a simple question: what problem does my work help solve, and who suffers from it?

The three forms of valorization

There are three main avenues for valorizing research work:

  1. License transfer: assigning the exploitation rights to an existing company in exchange for royalties
  2. R&D collaboration contract: a company finances the continuation of your research in exchange for rights
  3. Startup creation (spin-off): you personally drive the commercial exploitation

This guide focuses on the third avenue, the most ambitious and the most rewarding in the long term.

Exercise: the "So what?" test

For each research result, ask yourself:

"So what?" — And then? What does it concretely change for someone?

If you find a convincing answer, you may have an opportunity. Examples:

  • "Our algorithm detects crop diseases with 95% accuracy from a smartphone photo." → Precision agriculture accessible to every farmer
  • "Our material reduces the water consumption of concrete by 30%." → Sustainable construction in arid zones
  • "Our method extracts bioactive molecules from argan at one-fifth the cost." → Premium Made in Morocco cosmetics and nutraceuticals

Step 2: Protect before disclosing

This is the most common mistake: publishing or presenting your work before having protected it. A scientific publication destroys the novelty required to file a patent.

Intellectual property protection tools in Morocco

The invention patent is managed by OMPIC (the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property). It grants a 20-year exploitation monopoly within Moroccan territory.

Practical tip: File a provisional patent before publishing. You will then have one year to finalize your full filing while having established a priority date.

The role of your university's valorization unit

Most Moroccan universities have a technology transfer unit. At the UEMF, it is the Euromed Innovation Center that fulfills this mission.

These structures can:

  • Finance the initial patent filing
  • Handle the OMPIC procedures
  • Negotiate with industrial partners
  • Prepare a licensing agreement

Step 3: Build the proof of concept (PoC)

Between the laboratory result and the marketable product, there is often a "valley of death" — a grey area where academic funding stops but where private financiers do not yet step in.

Technology Readiness Levels (TRL)

The European Union and many funders use the TRL (Technology Readiness Level) scale to assess the maturity of a technology:

  • TRL 1-3: fundamental research, principles observed
  • TRL 4-5: laboratory validation, prototype
  • TRL 6-7: demonstration in a real environment
  • TRL 8-9: complete system, market-ready

Most university laboratories operate between TRL 1 and 4. The goal is to reach TRL 6-7 to be credible with investors.

Financing available for the PoC

In the Moroccan context, several mechanisms can finance this critical phase:

CNRST — National Center for Scientific and Technical Research

  • PPR program (Priority Research Program)
  • Annual calls for projects, budget between 200,000 and 1,000,000 MAD

Innovation Fund (Ministry of Industry)

  • Support for product and process innovation
  • Ticket up to 3,000,000 MAD with 50% co-financing

European programs

  • Horizon Europe (as a consortium partner)
  • EIC Accelerator program (for advanced-stage deeptech startups)

University incubators

  • Pre-seed: up to 100,000 MAD to validate the hypothesis

Step 4: Structure the founding team

The biggest mistake made by researcher-entrepreneurs is wanting to do everything alone. A startup needs at least three profiles:

  • The scientist (you): technical credibility, intellectual property, R&D
  • The business developer: market understanding, commercial network, go-to-market
  • The tech/operations profile: ability to industrialize, to scale, to manage execution

In the pre-revenue phase, the choice of legal status is crucial for several reasons:

  • Ability to raise funds
  • Management of intellectual property between founders and the university

The options available in Morocco

SARL (Limited Liability Company)

  • Minimum capital: 1 MAD (since 2018)
  • 2 to 50 partners
  • Ideal for the seed phase

SAS (Simplified Joint-Stock Company)

  • Maximum statutory flexibility
  • Facilitates funding rounds and the entry of investors
  • Recommended as soon as you anticipate a fundraising round

Auto-entrepreneur (sole proprietor)

  • For initial services and market testing
  • Revenue cap: 500,000 MAD (intellectual services)
  • Does not allow having partners

The valorization agreement with the university

When the intellectual property has been developed within the framework of a university employment contract, the university is a co-owner of the rights. A valorization agreement must define:

  • The share of the rights (generally 50-70% for the researcher, 30-50% for the university)
  • The development obligations
  • The royalties on revenue
  • The conditions for buying back the university's share

Step 6: Pitch and raise funds

Your research is protected, your PoC validated, your team assembled. It is time to raise funds.

Structuring the pitch for a researcher

A researcher tends to over-explain the technology and neglect the market. Reverse this order:

  1. The problem (30 seconds) — Who suffers, how many, at what cost?
  2. The solution (30 seconds) — What have you invented?
  3. The differentiation (30 seconds) — Why you and not the others?
  4. The market (1 minute) — TAM, SAM, SOM
  5. The business model (30 seconds) — How do you make money?
  6. The traction (30 seconds) — What have you already proven?
  7. The team (30 seconds) — Why are you the right people?
  8. The need (30 seconds) — How much, and what for?
